لقرن أو أكثر، كانت كليات إدارة الأعمال تقوم بتطوير طرق لتعليم طلابها الأدوات الأساسية لإدارة الأعمال - كيفية تصميم وفهم وثائق المحاسبة، وتحليل التدفق النقدي، وتقييم نقاط القوة والضعف في الخيارات الإستراتيجية المختلفة.
ربما تكون هذه الأدوات أو غيرها حيوية للمديرين الذين يبدأون مسيرتهم المهنية، ولكن عادة ما تقل قيمتها مع زيادة مسئوليات الفرد. والسبب بسيط: كلما علا منصب الشخص التنفيذي، زادت فرص أن يتضمن العمل اتخاذ قرارات معقدة تعتمد بشكل أقل على تلك الأدوات، وبشكل أكبر على الحكمة.
