منذ العبارة الأولى "لكن ما قيمة الحياة التي نعيشها؟" التي يسوقها إيهاب عبد العزيز على لسان "هند" بطلة الرواية في خطابها مع "علوان" وسط عالم من تناقضاتٍ شتى، الفقر، الغنى، الخراب، العمران، يفلح في إثارة إنتباه القارئ ل "حكاية النيل والبحر" وإذ نحن أمام حالة حب معلقة بين الحلم والمستحيل، والسبب الأوضاع العامة في البلاد والأزمة المالية التي جعلت من علوان واحد من ضحايا التسريح القسري من العمل، الأمر الذي انعكس سلبًا على علاقته ب "هند" فكان الفراق تحت ضغط الأهل والظروف.
وعلى وقع الفراق تتزوج هند من إبن عمها صلاح الذي يعمل في دبي وتنتقل من بلدها الأم إلى دبي لتعيش معه وفي القلب لوعة، أما علوان وبعد طول عناء لم يجد وظيفة سوى في مصنع تعبئة المياه الغازية مثله مثل كافة الشباب السوداني الذين يعملون بأجور زهيدة، على الرغم من أن جلّهم من ذوي الشهادات الجامعية والعليا. وسط هذا الواقع القاسي تدور رحى الرواية، ولكن يظل في الحياة فسحة من أمل، عندما يلعب القدر لعبته ويعثر علوان على هند جديدة وحب جديد؛ عندئذ يعرف علوان أن في الحياة خيارات كثيرة لكننا أحيانا ننظر بعين واحدة تستكن خلف برقع المجهول المدنس بصديد الآلام والخوف العتيد...
في الخطاب الروائي يمارس الكاتب خبرته السردية بتحكم واضح بأدواته، فيستخدم تقنية تعدد الرواة ويجمع بين الراوي العليم المراقب والرواة المشاركين في الأحداث، وينتقل من راوٍ إلى آخر بتلقائية، وحركية متداخلة تضفي على النص شيئاً من الحيوية والتشويق، مع تقسيم النص إلى خمسة وعشرين وحدة سردية مفتوحة على بعضها البعض، تاركاً للقارئ متعة جمع تفاصيل الحكاية وتركيبها من خلال الشخصيات والوقائع والأحداث.
