تعرّضنا، نحن وعائلتنا وأصدقاؤنا لمحنة دامت عشرين شهراً، كانت تجربة قاسية ومحنة لا يمكن للذاكرة أن تتغاضى عنها وتنكرها. وبعد أكثر من خمس عشرة سنة، قررنا أن ندوّن تلك الأحداث لكي لا تضيع في متاهات النسيان والزمن. في أحداث تلك المحنة كان يفصلنا جدار غير قابل للاختراق، جعل كلاً منا في ظلمة بمعزل عن الآخر. لذا قرّرنا أن يكتب كل منّا من موقعه من ذلك الجدار الذي فصلنا. لم نقدم على تحريك كلمة "الظلمة" التي جاءت في عنوان الكتاب، فيمكن أن تُقرأ بدلالة معنيين: الظََّلم: الليل الشديد الظلام، وظَلِمَ: أظلم الليل واسودّ، الظُّلْمة: ذهاب النور، بينما دلالة الظُّلم: ظَلَم، هي عدم الإنصاف، وانتقاص الحق، والجور. فالظُّلمة دلالة على سلطوية النظام وانتقاص حق الفرد، ما يجعل حياة أفراد المجتمع ظلمة، شديدة العتمة والبؤس، لذا يتداخل المعنيان في تكملة متمّمة فدلالتها هي ظلمة السلطة وعتمة الحياة.
