التقي بها خلال انتداب بريطانيا لفلسطين. كان طبيباً في الجيش الملكي البريطاني، وهي أرملة فلسطينية مسيحية من القدس.
كانت مريم وحيدة تعيش لطفلها، لم يمس قلبها رجل بعد موت زوجها. وجاءها هو كقدر لم تكن تنتظر قدومه، ولا تتوقعه، هي الشرقية المحافظة، وهو الغربي المتحرر من عادات الشرق وتقاليده. هل تحبه؟ وكيف؟ وهل تستطيع أن تنسى أنه بريطاني تحتل قوات بلده مدينتها وأهلها؟ ماذا تقول لهم، وكيف تداري حبها عنهم، وماذا تخبرهم بعد أن طلبها هذا "الغريب" البريطاني للزواج؟
