نجحت حركة التنوير الأوروبي في ترسيخ قيمها فكرياً وسياسياً واجتماعياً. أما حركة النهضة العربية الحديثة فظلّت إصلاحية نخبوية محدودة الفعل، وفشلت في الإقلاع بالمجتمع نحو الحرية وفي التأسيس للدولة المدنية الديموقراطية.مع ذلك تواصل جماعات قليلة العمل من أجل عودة نقدية للتراث المتراكم بدون تقديس ولا "أسطَرة"، ومن أجل إيجاد مكانة وضّاءة للإنسان العربي بعيداً عن العتمة وعن مختلف الأصوليات.يتمحور هذا الكتاب حول ظاهرة الاستنارة في البلاد العربية بوصفها حركة اجتماعية تاريخية وحركة فكرية وثقافية، ويسلّط الضوء على ما طرأ على تلك الحركة من تطوّرات وانقطاعات، وارتقاء ثم ركود فتقهقر. ويركّز المؤلّف في هذا السياق على أدوار الفاعلين، معروفين ومهمّشين، في تيار الاستنارة والإصلاح، ولا سيّما في تونس وبلدان المغرب.
