عندما قررت مصر إقامة خزان السد العالي عند أسوان، لفت أنظار العالم المشروع المدهش تصميما وحجما وتكلفة وفائدة، لكن آثاره الضارة على النوبة لم تسترع انتباه أحد. فالبحيرة التي خلقها الخزان كانت ذات أثر مدمر على كل النوبة المصرية وامتد أثرها على مسافة 150 كيلو مترا داخل السودان. ففي السودان -وحده- ابتلعت مياه البحيرة سبعا وعشرين قرية بالإضافة إلى مدينة وادي حلفا. وفقد 50 ألف نوبي سوداني مأواهم وكل أراضيهم ومساكنهم ونخيلهم ومقومات حياتهم. أما في مصر فقد قدر عدد النوبيين المتأثرين به (في القطرين) 120 ألف نفس.
والموضوع الذي يتناوله هذا الكتاب يتعلق بالنوبيين السودانيين الذين كانوا يقطنون الجزء الشمالي من مركز وادي حلفا ويعطي صورة لعلمية تصفية أملاكهم الثابتة، وتهجيرهم وإعادة إسكانهم في موطنهم الجديد بخشم القربة.
