أصيب الأدب العربي بمحنة تصيب كل أدب، محنة تكاد تكون طبيعية ومطردة في الآداب واللغات، إلا أن آجالها تختلف من أدب إلى أدب. فقد يطول أجلها في أدب أمة من الأمم ويقصر في أدب أمة أخرى، ويرجع ذلك إلى عومل عدة أهمها: الأحوال الاجتماعية والسياسية، وحركات الإصلاح والتجديد، والبعث الجديد. فإذا توافرت هذه العوامل في الأمة قصر أجل المحنة، وإذا فقدت أو ضعفت طال أجل المحنة، وطال شقاء الأدب والأمة كلها بها. هذه المحنة هي: تسلط أصحاب التصنع والتكلف على الأدب، الذين يتخذونه حرفة وصناعة، ويتنافسون في تنميقه وتحبيره، ليثبتوا براعتهم وتفوقهم وليصلوا به إلى أغراض شخصية محضة. وقد يطول هذا الأمر ويستفحل حتى يصبح الأدب مقصورا عليهم، ومختصا بهم، ويأتي على الناس زمان لا يفهمون فيه من كلمة ((الأدب)) إلا ما أثر عن هذه الطبقة من كلام مصنوع وأدب تقليدي لا قوة فيه ولا روح ولا جدة ولا متعة.
