قد تكون هذه هي المرة الأولى التي تفتح فيها صفحات مطوية من سجل العلاقات بين العالم العربي-الإسلامي وأوروبا. فالوقائع تثبت الآن أنه لم صحيحاً الاعتقاد بأن المسلمين وقفوا عند حدود إسبانيا الأندلسية في الغرب وعند حدود البلقان في الشرق. إن هذه الدراسة تلقي الضوء على عدد من الوقائع التي تثبت أنهم احتلوا لعقود طويلة عدداً من المرتفعات في جبال الألب، وسيطروا على طرق المواصلات بين فرنسا وإيطاليا وسويسرا، وأنهم اجتازوا هذه المرتفعات ووصلوا إلى العديد من المدن الواقعة في حوض نهر الرون. كما أن هذه الوقائع تؤكد أنهم تركوا آثاراً لا يزال بعضها قائماً حتى اليوم من قلاع ومساجد (تحولت إلى كنائس) ومقابر.. ومن المؤكد أنهم أدخلوا صناعات وزراعات لم تكن تعرفها المنطقة من قبل، ولا تزال تحمل أسماءها العربية. ولعل من المرجح أنهم تركوا أيضاً ذرية اعتنقت المسيحية فيما بعد وإن حافظت على بعض العادات والتقاليد.. ومنها الامتناع عن تربية الخنازير مثلاً!! لقد اكتسبت جبال الألب حتى ما بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية أهمية استراتيجية بالغة، فهي قلب أوروبا ورمز عنفوانها. ولذلك لم يول المؤرخون الأوروبيون اهتماماً استثنائياً بالفترة التي كانت هذه الجبال في قبضة العرب المسلمين، ولعل من أسباب ذلك أيضاً أن العرب لم يقيموا فيها دولة كما فعلوا في الأندلس.. وقد حاولت هذه الدراسة أن تلقي الضوء على أسباب ذلك أيضاً. كما تحاول أن تقدم أجوبة على بعض الأسئلة المثيرة للجدل، ومنها: لماذا احتل العرب جبال الألب؟ وماذا فعلوا هناك؟ ومن أين جاؤوا؟ وماذا تركوا وراءهم؟.. وكيف كانت علاقتهم بالسكان الأصليين؟ وبدولة الأندلس؟.. وبدولة الفاتيكان؟ وكيف تركوا تلك المناطق الجبلية؟ وبموجب أي معادلات سياسية -عسكرية؟ وأي آثار تركت كل هذه الأمور على العلاقات الإسلامية-المسيحية؟ وعلى العلاقات بين الشرق والغرب؟
