هذا الكتاب هو أحد الكتب القيمة التى ألفها واحد من أدق الرحالة، وأكثرهم علمًا، فضلاً عن أنه أيضًا من الرحالة المحدثين الذين يشيعون الأنس والود فيما يكتبون. الكتاب عبارة عن تاريخ للحجاز فى عام 1810م، أو إن شئت فقل إنه تاريخ للأرض المقدسة والمسلمين، وهذه المنطقة لم تكن معروفة فى أوروبا فى زمن بوركهات، كما يشمل الكتاب - أيضًا - وصفًا لمدينة مكة المكرمة والمدينة المنورة وينبع. والكتاب يثير فضول قارئه إلى أبعد حد ممكن وبخاصة إذا ما عرفنا أن المؤلف أقام في تلك المدن مدعيا أنه مسلم، بين أناس كان يعلم عنهم عدم وجود أحد من الرحالة يستطيع أن يكتب أي شيء عنهم. وصف بوركهارت لكل من جدة ومكة إنما هو وصف موسوعي، وهو الثمرة الطيبة لعين متأنية وفاحصة لم تغمض عن الاهتمام بكل ما لا يتعلق بالبشر.
