تعرض التاريخ العثماني للإهمال بوجه عام حتى النصف الأول من القرن العشرين. فقد تأثر الكتاب الأوروبيون باتجاهات معاصريهم من الدولة العثمانية التي ظلت تشكل بالنسبة إلى أوروبا لمدة ستة قرون مشكلة كبرى: فهي في بادئ الأمر كانت تمثل رد الفعل الإسلامي ضد الخطر الصليبي. ثم ما لبثت أن اعترضت المشروعات الاستعمارية الأوروبية. وحين ضعفت أثارت ما عرف في المصطلح السياسي باسم ''المسالة الشرقية''. التي شغلت أذهان الأوروبيين ولم يسدل عليها الستار إلا بانهيار الإمبراطورية العثمانية. بيد أن الاهتمام بالوثائق العثمانية ودراستها قد عدلا النظرة إلى التاريخ العثماني خلال العقود الأخيرة. وأضحى التاريخ العثماني المحور المفضل لأقسام الدراسات الشرقية في جامعات أوروبا وأميركا. وأصبح بالإمكان وضعه في مكانته الصحيحة في إطار التاريخ العالمي: إذ أن الدولة العثمانية قد ظهرت في ثنايا رد الفعل الإسلامي إزاء أوروبا الآخذة في التوسع في شرقي البحر المتوسط بالقرنين الرابع عشر والخامس عشر. وهي تمثل أقوى وأنجح مقاومة لأوروبا من جانب المشرق. كما أنها لعبت دورها في تكوين ما نطلق عليه اسم أوروبا الحديثة، وفي إعادة تشكيل مجتمعات جنوب شرقي أوروبا والشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا.
