إن دراسة التصوف في عصر من العصور تعتبر من الدراسات المهمة والمثمرة في آن واحد، لصلته القوية بالمجتمع من حيث تنظيمه السياسي والاجتماعي والاقتصادي والديني، وانعكاس ذلك كله على النواحي الفكرية والحضارية، وبالتالي على تقدم المجتمع أو تأخره. من هنا ظهرت عدة دراسات تناولت التصوف الإسلامي بوجه عام في أماكن متفرقة وعصور مختلفة. ومع أن التصوف في مصر عبر مراحله تناولته العديد من الكتابات التاريخية والاجتماعية والفلسفية، فإن الكتابات التي تناولت التصوف في مصر في العصر العثماني اتسمت بعدة سمات، تجعلها ناقصة من الناحية الأكاديمية، ومن هنا يأتي أحد جوانب أهمية هذه الدراسة.
