من بين ما تفخر به أمة القرآن، ويحق لها، تراثها العلمي والأدبي الذي أودعه المؤلفون عبر العصور أسفارا كتبوها بأيديهم ثم نقلها عنهم النساخ فكونت مكتبات المخطوطات في حواضر الإسلام وبواديه. وقد اتخذ البحث العلمي المخطوط موضوعا لا من حيث محتوى العلم المودع فيه فحسب، بل من حيث الحامل وعمل الإنجاز أي إنتاج المخطوط في شكله ومادته وطريقة قيامه. وقد تخصص ناس في هذا البحث، ولكل علم مصطلح، وبقدر نمو العلم ينمو المصطلح. وبقدر تضلع العلماء في تخصصهم بقدر شعورهم بضرورة صناعة المصطلح وضبطه وتنميطه والمناقشة فيه باعتباره الوسيط في الوصف والتصور بغاية التفاهم والتقدم. وهكذا نفهم من عمل الأستاذين أحمد شوقي بنبين ومصطفى طوبي في هذا المعجم أن المخطوط العربي وهو ينجز احتاج إلى مصطلح، بل إن صناعته أثمرت مصطلحا على قدر رقي هذه الصناعة وتطورها. ولم يتيسر له أن ينتظم في سلك بمثل هذا الترتيب والاكتمال إلا في وقتنا هذا وقد عرفت الكوديكولوجيا تقدما كبيرا عند الحضارات التي تناول أصحابها نفس الموضوع استخراجا مما دونه أرباب صناعة المخطوط. يقف المستعمل لهذا المعجم على مادة غنية في ما يقرب من ألفي مدخل وتعريف، فيقتنع أن الإنجاز هذا كسب للغة العربية من حيث قاموسها العام ومن حيث قدرتها على التخصص، ثم يقف على هذه المادة كمرآة لحضارة صنعت وسمت كل ما صنعت، وفي هذا جواب عن تلبسات الإشكال الذي يواجهنا عندما نتحدث عن أزمة اللغة، وهاهنا ومن خلال هذا المثال تتجلى كأزمة صناعة وأزمة ابتكار، فإذا قدرنا اليوم كما قدرنا بالأمس على الصناعة والابتكار قدرنا على أن نجد الأسماء والمعاني الجديدة وإلا غلبنا سيل مصنوعات الغير التي ترافقها لغات هذا الغير فتغتني بها، واضطررنا بعجزنا إلى اللهث وراء الركب، وليس ركب اللغة سوى جزء من الركب العام للحياة.
