تمثل النصوص التي يضمها هذا الكتاب مجموعتين مختلفتين. فقد جمعت الأساطير التسع عشرة الأولى في صيف عام 1909 ، رعاية ((مكتب الإثنولوجيا الأمريكي)). وكان السيد جيم بيوكانان مصدري الوحيد في الحصول على هذه المعلومات، وهو ينتمي إلى قبيلة كوز Coos من الهنود الحمر، ويعيش في أكمي في مقاطعة لين، في ولاية أوريغون. وهو حاليا الشخص الوحيد الذي ينتمي إلى قبيلة كوز والذي لا يزال يتذكر ويمكنه أن يروي على نحو مترابط ومتماسك بعض أساطير الأجيال الغابرة وتقاليدها. وقام السيد هاري هال سانت كلير الثاني، بجمع النصوص المرقمة من 20 إلى 32، في صيف عام 1903. وحسب معلوماتي، فقد نقلت هذه الحكايات على لسان شخصين هما السيدان جيم بيوكانان وتوم هوليس. ويعيش الأخير حاليا في مجمية سيليز بولاية أوريغون. وبما أن عددا قليلا من النصوص التي نقلها ل جيم بيوكانان لم تكن واضحة في ذاكرته، كما هو شأن بعض القصص التراثية الأخرى، فإنها تفتقر إلى الانسيابية والترابط في روايتها وإلى الوضوح في الوصف، وبعض هذه النصوص ملئ بمقاطع يشوبها الكثير من الغموض. وفي بعض الحالات، كانت تنتابنا شكوك خاصة تتعلق بشخصية بطل الحكاية أو بهوية المتكلم. ومع أنه من السهل نسبيا إعادة توضيح هذه النصوص، فقد رأيت أن من المستحسن (وخاصة لاعتبارات لغوية) أن أتركها كما رويت في نصوصها الأصلية، وأن أترك تفسير المعنى المقصود لحكمة القارئ الحصيف.
