لماذا العنوان : ((أديان ومعتقدات العرب قبل الإسلام)) ؟ قصدنا التمييز بين الدين والمعتقد عند العرب قبل الإسلام، لتبيان: 1- أديان الوحي السائدة آنذاك. 2- المعتقدات غير الموحى بها. إن في هذا التمييز اصطناع منهجي قسري، فرضته ظروف الدراسة، ومقتضيات زمنية تاريخية. ونحن هنا نذهب إلى اعتبار أن لا تمييز في الأساس بين الدين والمعتقد، جل ما في الأمر، أن هناك ديانات سماوية قيد لها الانتشار وبلوغ الجزيرة العربية (المسيحية واليهودية..)، فانصاغت عند شعوب تلك البقعة الجغرافية كل بحسب خلفياته ومعتقداته الفكرية. إذن هناك معتقدات أي طرق تفكير وآفاق تفكير، وبنى ذهنية هي التي تستوعب وتبني ونصيغ. وعندما يتمكن الدين الموحى به من ذهنية شعب ما أو مجموعة بشرية ما، يصبح طريقة تفكير ومنحى تفكير، أي معتقدا. من هذا المنحى يندمج الدين مع المعتقد. لن أخض هنا في التفسيرات اللغوية والأثيمولوجية للفظة دين ولفظة معتقد، فإن ذلك سوف يستغرقنا في مباحث جانبية لا نسعى إليها. وإذا كان البعض يرى في المعتقد مرحلة عدم ثبات وترجرج، انطلاقا من أن لفظة اعتقاد لا ترقى إلى مستوى اليقين العلم، إلا أن اعتقاد الشيء على ما هو به، يرقى إلى مستوى اليقين العلم. وبذلك يمكن لنا من وجه ما، هو ما نسعى إليه أن نوفق بين المعتقد والدين، معتمدين الفصل المنهجي الدراسي للتمييز بينهما.
