يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى تتبع الجهود التي بذلها رواد الدراسات العربية الذين حاولوا نقل التراث العربي الشعبي إلى معاصريهم، بعد أن أعادوا الصياغة من ناحية، وأعادوا الاستفادة من هذا التراث بحيث لا يتعارض مع الروح الإسلامية والفكر العربي المتأثر بها من ناحية أخرى، فكانوا بهذا ينقلون الفكر العالمي الذي دخل مع الإسلام إلى الحياة الإنسانية عن طريقهم، محملا بإضافاتهم وجهودهم وبالفكر العربي القديم كله. ثم يسعى الكتاب أيضا إلى إجلاء صورة هذه المحاولات التي عمد كثير من المغرضين إلى تجاهلها، كراهية لمعنى الوجود الحضاري الإسلامي، فتعرض لكثير من المستشرقين المغرضين بالرد والمناقشة، ومحاولة وضع المعلومة الصحيحة في مكانها الذي عملوا على تجاهله وإهداره. والكتاب بهذا محاولة مهمة، في هذا المجال، وإن تأخرت كثيرا. وهي محاولة واجبة، إذا كتب لها التوفيق فقد أدت الغاية، وإلا فيكفي أنها تنبه الفكر المعاصر إلى ما تعرض له الفكر العربي الإسلامي من غبن وتزييف وتحامل، وهو ما ينتظر كثيرا من العمل العلمي الدؤوب لتفنيده والرد عليه.
