عندما نتحدث عن الأدب الأمريكي لا يتعين أن نؤكد اختلافه المطلق عن الآداب الأوروبية. فقد سارت أمريكا بوجه عام جنبا إلى جنب مع أوروبا ويستطيع الرحالة في أي لحظة محدودة ان يجد في كليهما أمثلة متطابقة من نفس الأشكال المعمارية والأزياء والكتب. فلم تكن الأفكار أقل تهيؤا لعبور الأطلنطي من الرجال والبضائع، وإن كانت أحيانا أكثر بطئا من هؤلاء. وعندما أشير إلى العادات الامريكية والأفكار الأمريكية إلخ، فأنا أقصد أن احصر معنى كلمة ((أمريكية)) داخل نطاق ضيق، ففي أغلب الأحيان يكون الفرق بين أمريكا وأوروبا (وبالذات إنجلترا) فرقا في الدرجة لا في النوع – وأحيانا يكون فرقا طفيفا جدا. ثم إن تحديد كمية الاختلاف مسألة شاقة كفيلة بان تحير الرجل الإنجليزي عندما يمعن النظر في أمريكا. فهو يجد أمامه بلدا نبت (بأكثر من معنى) من بلده، ولا يزال يشبه بلده في أوجه متعددة. ورغم ذلك يعتبر بلدا أجنبيا. إنه يجد أشياء فيها تطابق عجيب، كما يجد أشياء فيها تباين مفاجئ : فصلة القرابة تخضع لانفصال غير متوقع، تماما كما لو بادرنا شخصا على الجانب الآخر من الطريق بالتحية ثم اكتشفنا من استجابته الباهتة أنه شخص غريب خلناه صديقا....
