اهتم الباحثون بأدب الرحل، وأفاضوا في الحديث عن مكانة أدب الرحلة وما ينطوي عليه من ذخائر، فكشفوا بدراساتهم وبحوثهم عن هذا الجانب المهم من جوانب الثقافة العربية. غير أن كثيرا من هذا الدراسات اتسمت بالعمومية والاختصار، والخطأ في المعلومات أحيانا، والمزج بين رحل المشارقة والمغاربة، فرغبت في أن أخصص دراستي هذه لأدب الرحلة في المغرب الإسلامي الذي يضم دول المغرب العربي والأندلس، وذلك لازدهار هذا الضرب من الأدب في تلك البلاد، ووفرة الرحل وتوعها واهميتها في إماطة اللثام عن الحياة العلمية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية في البلدان التي مر بها أصحاب تلك الرحل. وقد كان الهدف الذي جعلته نصب عيني من هذه الدراسة أن أرسم صورة واضحة لنشأة هذا الضرب من الأدب، وتطوره واتجاهاته، واقتضى ذلك مني ان أسير مع هذه الرحل وفق التسلسل الزمني لتدوينها. وإني في هذا البحث لم أستقص كل الرحل في المغرب الإسلامي بل اخترت بعضا منها ظنا مني أنها تفي بالغرض، وقديما قالوا : يكفيك من القلادة ما أحاط بالعنق، وعسى أن تعطى هذه الدراسة صورة عن هذا الأدب، وأن تكون حافزا للمهتمين لإقامة مزيد من الدراسات الجادة التي تسهم في وضع أدب الرحلة في مكانه الصحيح في تاريخ العلوم عند العرب.
