يقول أفقر العبيد إلى عفو مولاه وأحوجهم إلى بره ورضاه محمود بن محمد عرف بابن المطماطية التجاني حقق نسبته إلى سيده هذا وبلغه كل الأماني إني كنت منذ سنة 1319 وأنا أبحث عن رجال قسنطينة أعلامها الكبار الفخام وأوليائهم الأخيار العظام وأقيد كل ما أجده وأقف عليه من مآثرهم العلمية وكرماتهم العلية بما في بطون كتبهم ومؤلفاته القديمة ولقد استعملت كامل جدي واجتهادي في هذا البحث وتحملت في ذلك أتعابا شاقة وأي أتعاب حتى اجتمعت لدي ما نيف على المائتين والخمسين (250) ترجمة من تراجم الرجال الكاملين المعتبرين في العلم والصلاح من أهل بليدتنا المذكورة منذ القرن السادس للهجرة ثم شرعت في ترتيبهم ترتيب الطبقات في تأليف جميل قد خصصته لهم سميته ''سفينة السكينة في تراجم صلحاء وعلماء قسنطينة"
