امتد تأثير الأستغرافيا الفرنسية خلال الفترة المعاصرة إلى أبعد الحدود. فمدرسة ((الحوليات))، ومن بعدها ((التاريخ الجديد))، فرنسية النشأة والتطور بالدرجة الأولى. استطاعت من خلال إشعاعها أن تمتد إلى باقي دول أوربا وأمريكا وبنسبة أقل إلى الدول العربية. وبرز في أواخر الثمانينيات جيل من المؤرخين الباحثين الذين ينتمون إلى دول أوربية مجاورة، نخص بالذكر منها دول إيطاليا وألمانيا وبولونيا، ساهموا إلى جانب بعض المؤرخين الفرنسيين في ضخ دماء جديدة في حقل الاستغرافيا من خلال تجاوز مقاربات التاريخ الجديد وتأثيرات التيار البنيوي. من هذا المنطلق ارتأينا التركيز على هذه التجربة المتميزة في الكتابة التاريخية، من خلال تتبع دقيق لخصائصها ورصد تغيراتها وتحولاتها، مع الانفتاح على تأثير التيارات الألمانية والأنجلوسكسونية والإيطالية التي ظلت حاضرة في سياقات أخرى إما بشكل مواز أو مختلف حسب الفترات التاريخية. بهذا يفتح هذا الكتاب صفحة من صفحات خصائص تاريخ الكتابة التاريخية في الفترة المعاصرة بأوربا عامة وفرنسا خصوصا. فمن سيطرة المدرسة المنهجية في القرن التاسع عشر، إلى نشأة ((الحوليات)) في عشرينيات القرن الماضي، إلى اللحظة التي وسمها الباحثون بالأزمة مع جيل التاريخ الجديد. وقد تتبعنا تتبعا تاريخيا خصائص كل مرحلة من هذه المراحل بالدراسة والتحليل، وأبرزنا الأشياء التي تغيرت بين الأمس واليوم في الكتابة التاريخية خلال المرحلة المعاصرة.
