لم تكن الدكتورة نازك سابا يارد الأولى التي كتبت عن رحالينا وموقفهم من الحضارة الغربية وأبعاد الصراع التي خلفتها تلك الرحلات في نفوس الرحالين، ومن ثم في كتاباتهم. لكن يبدو لي أنه فيما تناول الكتاب السابقون رحاليهم مجموعات في فترات معينة، أو أفرادا، سعت المؤلفة إلى أن يكون إطارها أوسع. إن هذه القوس الواسعة مكنت المؤلفة من أن تضع أمامها الأبعاد التي استطاع الرحالون أن يدركوها، كما يسرت لها أن تضع بين أيدينا صورا فيها مقارنة ومقابلة، ومن ثم إحاطة. وقد كان للمؤلفة هم واحد أساسي هي القضية الحضارية بوجوهها المختلفة، الفكرية والاجتماعية والسياسية والاقتصادية والأدبية. من هنا كان النتاج أفضل وما حصلنا عليه أدسم. الكتاب فيه عرض للأحوال العامة التي كانت تسود في الفترات التي قسمن إليها بحثها. وإدراكها لهذه الأحوال أسعفها كثيرا في وضع إصبعها على المواقف – المتطورة والمتبدلة والمتغيرة – والأوضاع الثابتة، في أوروبا وفي بلاد العرب في الشؤون الحضارية، ومن ثم بتأثر حالينا بها. د. نقولا زيادة تقدم لنا الدكتورة نازك سابا يارد في هذا الكتاب (وهو أفضل الدراسات في العلاقات العربية الغربية على الصعيدين الفكري والثقافي، إن لم نقل أفضلها إطلاقا) عرضا دقيقا وجذابا لانبهار الرحالة العرب بما شاهدوا واختبروا في الغرب، وخاصة من حيث تقدم الغرب دولا ومجتمعات وأفرادا وحضارة وقيما، بهدف المساهمة في ترقية مجتمعاتهم وتطويرها، لعل شعوبهم تلحق بالركب المتقدم وتنفض عنها غبارا متراكما من التخلف – مع انتباه معظمهم إلى ضرورة الحفاظ على ما للعرب من قيم دينية وخلقية وتراث يعتزون به. د.أنيس صايغ
