تمثل الملاحظة الشخصية أهم مصدر من مصادر المعرفة الجغرافية إلى جانب المصادر الأخرى كالاعتماد على تراث السلف والحساب الرياضي والرصد الفلكي .. الخ وكنتيجة لاتساع الدولة الإسلامية غدت المعطيات الجغرافية لدى العرب أعظم بكثير مما كانت لدى أسلافهم من اليونان والرومان. ولقد امتدت معرفتهم الجغرافية إلى جزر اليابان (واق واق) وكوريا (سيلا اوشيلا) شرقا، ومعظم اسيا بها فيها كنلة انجارا وجزر الهند الشرقية. أما في افريقيا فقد عرفوا جيدا شمال افريقيا حتى خط عرض 10 شمالا، كما تاجروا مع الساحل الشرقي لأفريقيا حتى موزمبيق (سفالة) بل وصلوا حتى الناتال جنوبا، ويعتقد البعض أنهم داروا حول رأس الرجاء الصالح منذ القرن العاشر الميلادي. ولقد أرفق الأميرال البرتغالي الفونسو البوكيرك في تقرير لع لملك البرتغال عام 1512 خارطة بحرية كبيرة لملاح من جاوه موضحا عليها رأس الرجاء الصالح والبرتغال والبحر الأحمر والخليج العربي وجزائر الملوك ومسالك ملاحية إلى الصين وجزر فورموزا. كما عرفوا جزر كناري (الخالدات والسعادات) وفي أوروبا عرفوا جنوب أوروبا ووسطها كما عرفوا بريطانيا وايرلنده والدول الاسكندنافية ومعظم روسيا. ويعتقد البعض أنهم عرفوا أمريكا قبل كريستوف كولمبوس بخمسة قرون على الأقل.
