إن المشهد "التقليدي" لتاريخ البلقان والقفقاس والأناضول أقل من كامل، إن لم يكن مضللا، لأن تاريخ الجماعات التي شكلت الأقلية في الإمبراطورية العثمانية استثني من سياق الكلام .. وهو معاناة المسلمين من طرد وإبادة، التي حدثت في المناطق نفسها وفي الوقت نفسه الذي حدثت فيه معاناة المسيحيين، والتي كثيرا ما فاقتها. سخر من القلة التي حاولت أن تعدل المشهد التقليدي على أنها "منقحة"، وكأن التنقيح إثم أكاديمي والدقة التاريخية القرينية لا علاقة لها بالموضوع. إن تنقيح تاريخ متحيز وتغيير حكمة تقليدية مغلوطة هما في الحقيقة من مهمات المؤرخ، والتنقيح في بعض مجالات التاريخ، كتاريخ الشعوب العثمانية ضروري إلى حد بعيد. إن التاريخ الذي ينتج عن عملية التنقيح هو تاريخ غير مفصول فيه، لأنه يروي قصة العثمانيين كونهم ضحايا، وهذا ليس الدور الذي يصورون به عادة. إنه لا يقدم الصورة التقليدية للأتراك، وكأنهم جلادون وليسوا ضحايا قط، تلك الصورة التي استمرت في تاريخ أميركا وأوروبا فترة طويلة في حين كان يجب نبذها منذ زمن بعيد هي والآثار الدخيلة الأخرى على التمييز العنصري في القرن التاسع عشر.. إن خسارة المسلمين جزء مهم من تاريخ الأتراك. لقد كانوا هم أكثر من لمس عواقب العصبية والاستعمار. في الوقت الذي كانت فيه الإمبراطورية العثمانية تكافح لإصلاح ذاتها والحفاظ على وجودها دولة حديثة، اضطرت في البداية إلى أن تستنزف مواردها المحدودة لتحمي شعبها من القتل على يد أعدائها، ثم إلى تحاول أن تقدم الرعاية للاجئين الذين تدفقوا إلى الإمبراطورية من بلغاريا واليونان ويوغوسلافيا وإرمينية وجورجيا وروسيا وأوكرانيا وأمكنة أخرى، عندما انتصر هؤلاء الأعداء.. بعد أن وضعت الحروب أوزارها، كانت مجتمعات مسلمة في منطقة بحجم أوربة الغربية كاملة قلصت أو أبيدت. تقلصت مجتمعات البلقان العثمانية العظيمة إلى جزء من أعدادها السابقة. في القفقاس، طرد الجركس واللاز والأبخاز والأتراك وآخرون من جماعات مسلمة صغيرة.. وتمت بذلك إحدى أكبر مآسي التاريخ.
