في الجيل الماضي، كان تولي منصب عميد أكاديمي يعني تغيرا دائما في دور الشخص في التعليم العالي، وهو انتقال طويل المدى إلى الإدارة. ولكن خلال العقد الماضي كان المعدل الإجمالي للعمداء قد تسارع تسارعا دراميا، وأصبحت النتيجة المهمة أنه لم يعد يعني الوصول إلى العمادة اختيار عمل دائم، أو بلوغ الذروة، ولكن أصبح شكلا من اشكال الأعمال الأكاديمية. مع أنه عمل مهم جدا. إذا أضيف إلى ذلك الطبيعة المتغيرة دائما للتعليم العالي والمطالب الفنية الملقاة على العمداء، فإن هذا يعني أنه يجب على كل من يفكر في العمادة الأكاديمية أن يدرس تنوعا أكبر من الاعتبارات مما كان يفعل زملاؤه في الماضي، ومع موارد للنصح أقل من الماضي. لقد تغيرت طبيعة العمل كما تغيرت سلسلة الخيارات المحتملة في نهاية في نهاية فترة العمادة. قررنا أن نكتب هذا الكتاب معتمدين على خبراتنا كعمداء أكاديميين في مؤسسات مختلفة، وعلى انغماسنا الشديد في الهيئات المهنية للعمداء، وعلى مرئياتنا لتلك الخبرات بعدما عدنا إلى أدوارنا النشطة في الهيئة التدريسية في الكليات الخاصة بنا. واتضح لنا سريعا أنه توجد كتابات أخرى قليلة حول موضوع العمادة هذا ولكنها تركز إما على أعمال إدارية معينة وإما على مواضيع عف عليها الزمن نسبيا (على سبيل المثال، لا تبدي أي اعتبار لأدوات أساسية مثل: البريد الإلكتروني أو إنها تنصح العمداء بأن يهملوا وظائفهم الأكاديمية) أو إنها تقدم معلومات مختصرة بدلا من تقديمها مفهوما عن العمل ككل. يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تقديم صورة أحدث للعمادة وهو يناقش تحديات هذا المنصب وعطاءاته. ونأمل في أن يقدم إلى العميد الطموح قاعدة لتقييم معرفي لهذه الوظيفة كمهنة مختارة، وأن يقدم للعميد المعين حديثا نصيحة عملية للبدء بالعمل، وأن يقدم تقييما فكريا للعمادة في سياقها الأوسع، وأن يشجع العمداء ذوي الخبرة على التفكير في نواياهم المهنية التي تنشأ كي يتحكموا في توقيت انتقالهم إلى خارج مكتب العميد وطريقة هذا الانتقال. بإيجاز، يتوجه هذا الكتاب أولا وقبل كل شيء إلى العمداء الأكاديميين الطامحين والموجودين على رأس عملهم. لم نحاول التطرق إلى المسؤوليات الخاصة في المراكز المتعلقة بالعمداء مثل العميد المختص بالطلاب أو عميد القبول، فهذه بالواقع على مسار آخر من التدريب المهني ومن التقدم. إن العمادة الأكاديمية، والتي لها جذور في تدرج عضو الهيئة التدريسية في مهنته، هي محط تركيزنا.
