لقد احتدم الجدل حول العلاقة بين التدريس والبحث حتى كل ومل من دخل فيه وصار، المتناظرون لا يلتفتون إلى أطروحات بعضهم البعض وأصبح كل واحد يتحدث بمنأى عن الآخر. فمنهم من يقول بضرورة وجود علاقة وثيقة إيجابية بين التعليم والبحث، وآخر يقول : إن التعليم والبحث يمثلان نشاطين منفصلين إلى حد بعيد- بل إنهما بالمنطق نوعان مختلفان من الأنشطة – ويدعي كذلك (وكأن هذه الإضافة من مقتضيات الطرح) غياب الدليل التجريبي الذي يؤيد القول بوجود ((علاقة وثيقة وإيجابية)) وسط كل هذا تختلط الحقائق والقيم والآمال اختلاطا يستعصي على التمييز. ولا يكاد يلاحظ أن أطراف الجدل لا يخاطب بعضهم بعضا؛ وكل منهم يتحدث من مواقع متباينة القيم. وبطبيعة الحال، هناك أصوات تتميز بتحديد أكبر، ولكن التفاصيل التي تشد الانتباه هي اختلافات على الفكرة القائلة بأن ((الأمر كله يتوقف علي))؛ فطرف يقول: إن الأمر كله يتوقف على الموضوع، وطرف آخر، أكثر تصلبا، يرى الأمر متوقفا على نوع المؤسسة التي نقصدها، في حين يرى آخرون أن الأمر كله يتوقف على مستوى الدراسة. وحتى في النقاط المحددة نواجه صعوبات، إذ غالبا ما يوجد اختلاف في الرأي حول العلاقات القائمة بين التدريس والبحث، أو حتى على مجرد وجود مثل هذه العلاقات. فهل تدعم استراتيجية البث في مؤسسة ما حقا استراتيجية التعلم والتدريس فيها؟ فثمة اختلافات في الرأي حتى بين أعضاء فريق الإدارة المخضرم في هذا الموضوع.
