لقد لوحظ أن قطاعا كبيرا من الناس يصلون، ويصومون، ويزكون، ويحجون، وربما تعدوا ذلك إلى النوافل والمندوبات؛ ولكن رغم ذلك لا أثر لهذه العبادات على سلوكهم وأخلاقهم، فقد تجد المصلي يغش ويكذب، ويغتاب الناس، وقد يأكل أموالهم ظلما، وقد يهتك أعراضهم، وقد تجد الصائم يسب ويقذف، ويفعل الموبقات، وقد تجد المزكي يمن على من يعطيه ويؤذيه، وقد تجد الحاج يلتهم أموال الناس بالباطل، وهؤلاء جميعا؛ إما أن يكونوا لا يعيشون هذه العبادات بأرواحهم وقلوبهم ابتغاء مرضاة الله، فأداؤهم لها أداء صوري شكلي لا جوهري؛ وإما أنهم يفصلون بين العقيدة والأخلاق، وبين العبادة والمعاملة، فشعارهم أن العبادة شيء، والحياة شيء آخر. فهم يقصرون العبادة على مجرد أدائها، فهؤلاء أصيبوا بانفصام في الشخصية؛ فهم في المسجد أولياء صالحون، وخارجه ذئاب ضوار... فهؤلاء ما فهموا العبادات حق الفهم، ففي الحقيقة ما فرضت العبادة إلا لتهذيب الأخلاق، وتقويم السلوك – فضلا عن أنها طاعة مطلقة لله....
