إن أخلاق العناية، التي لا يتعدى عمرها بضعة عقود، صارت اليوم نظرية أخلاقية مستقلة ومقاربة مهمة للتعامل مع المشكلات التي نواجهها على المستويين العالمي والسياسي وأيضا على مستوى العلاقات الشخصية، التي فيها تتجلى العناية في أوضح صورها. ويحاول هذا الكتاب، الذي يعد الأول من نوعه، حتى في الغرب، فتح آفاق جديدة في مجال علم الأخلاق من خلال النظر في أخلاق العناية كبديل واعد من النظريات الأخلاقية التقليدية، التي لم تعد فاعلة في توجيه حياة البشر، وتحديد سمات هذه الأخلاق ومبادئها والنتائج التي يمكنها أن تقودنا إلى تحقيقها، وما الذي يجعل هذه الأخلاق ذات جاذبية عالمية. وتستعرض المؤلفة الجذور النسوية لهذه الأخلاق، ثم تحاول أن تحدد معنى ((العناية))، وما سمات الشخص الذي يقدم العناية. وهي ترى أنه في حين تشترط الأخلاق التقليدية، في الدرجة الأولى، الحياد والموضوعية، فإن أخلاق العناية، تفهم الأهمية الأخلاقية للعلاقات التي تربطنا بعائلاتنا والمجموعات التي ننتمي إليها. وهي تقيم هذه العلاقات وتركز على علاقات العناية عوضا عن التركيز على فضائل الأفراد. كما هي حال نظريات الأخلاق التقليدية، وتبين أن قيما مثل العدالة والمساواة والحقوق الفردية لا تتعارض، بل تتسق، مع قيم مثل العناية والثقة والاهتمام بالآخر والتعاضد. كما تحاول المؤلفة فحص الإمكانات الواعدة الأخلاق العناية، في مقابل كل من الأخلاق الكانطية والأخلاق النفعية، في التعامل مع عدد مع القضايا الاجتماعية والعالمية – في مجال التعاون الدولي علي وجه الخصوص – التي يثيرها رواج قيم وأخلاقيات السوق.
