يحاول هذا الكتاب في البداية تقديم نبذة عن المدرسة الفكرية السائدة في السعودية؛ جذورها وتحولاتها، ثم يلحقها بأخرى عن التحولات (الجيو) سياسية في الحقبة الأولى من تاريخ السعودية وواقع التعليم العالي خلالها، ثم يستعرض بعض نقاط التحول الرئيسة التي قادت إلى تغيرات سياسية واجتماعية وتأثير ذلك على بيئة ونظم التعليم العالي، ثم يقرأ التأثيرات الأيدولوجية في العليم العالي، ويحلل علاقة مؤسسات التعليم العالي بالدولة، ويحاول أخيرا استقراء التحولات المستقبلية. الكتاب لا ينكر أهمية البحث العلمي والدراسات الدينية، ولا ينكر أحقية الآخرين في اتباع المدرسة الدينية التي تناسبهم. وإنما يهدف إلى تقديم قراءة لواقع حدث فيه اختراق لبنيات التعليم العالي ومناهجه ونظمه من قبل المدرسة الأيديولوجية الواحدة بشكل أسهم في تدني معايير العدالة والحرية الفكرية وقبول الآخر والنضج الإداري والتميز الأكاديمي وغير ذلك من مميزات التعليم الجامعي المتطور. التنبوء بالمستقبل يبدو من الصعوبة بمكان، فرغم الإيجابيات والمبادرات التي نلحظها؛ إلا أنها لا تزال متواضعة، ولم ترتق إلى الحد المطلوب لإحداث حراك فكري حقيقي ببنية التعليم العالي السعودي، ولا زالت الجامعات السعودية تفتقد التمايز والتنافس والاستقلالية التي تسمح لها بأي حراك فعلي ومستدام على مستوى البنية التنظيمية والفكرية والثقافية ، وتظل أطر المدرسة الأيديولوجية والإدارية الواحدة تتحكم في مفاصل الفكر الجامعي السعودي.
