يعد كتاب "اختراق الجزيرة العربية" لمؤلفه ديفيد هوجارث بمثابة سجل يكاد يكون شاملا لتطور معرفة الغرب بشبه الجزيرة العربية عبر أربعة قرون من المغامرة والعلم، وعلى وجه التحديد منذ بداية القرن السادس عشر حتى السنوات الأولى من القرن العشرين. والكتاب كما هو واضح من عنوانه لا يهتم بسواحل الجزيرة العربية التي كانت معروفة لدى الأوروبيين منذ وصول البرتغاليين إليها في السنوات الأولى من القرن السادس عشر –وتبعتهم القوى الأوروبية الأخرى من إنجليز وهولنديين وفرنسيين- ولكنه يعنى بالتركيز على دواخل الجزيرة العربية التي ظلت بعيدة عن مجال المعرفة الأوروبية، واحتاجت إلى جهود مكثفة للتعرف عليها قام بها العديد من المغامرين والرحالين الأوروبيين، يدفعهم إلى ذلك العديد من الدوافع العلمية أو السياسية أو التجارية أو غيرها من دوافع أخرى. ومهما كانت تلك الدوافع فإنها أدت في النهاية إلى الكشف عن كل ما يتعلق بشبه الجزيرة العربية، حضارتها القديمة وآثارها وجغرافيتها وجيولوجيتها وطبوغرافيتها وغيرها.
