لم تكن ماريا، الفتاة الشابة القادمة من شمال شرق أمريكا اللاتينية ، تتطلع إلا إلى المغامرة في بحثها عن الحب الكبير. عملت كبائعة في متجر أقمشة وحصلت على إجازة قضتها في ريو دي جانيرو، على شاطئ كوباكابانا. عرض عليها رجل سويسري أن تصبح راقصة كباريه في جنيف، فرأت في ذلك العرض بداية حكاية سحرية، لكن الواقع سيكون شيئا آخر تماما. وصل الأمر بماريا إلى أنها عملت في البغاء –دون خجل- لأنها علمت روحها ألا تتذمر مما يفعله جسدها، ومنعت نفسها من الوقوع في الحب فالبغاء أساسا هو مهنة مثل غيره، وله قواعد ومواعيد وأيام راحة. لكن الجنس –مثل الحب- بقي بالنسبة لها لغزا. ويستوجب على ماريا العثور على طريق المصالحة مع نفسها لكي تكتشف المعنى المقدس للجنس. إن باولو كويلهو يصف بحرفية عالية، ونص خلاق، خطوة خطوة مسار انتساب شابة إلى عالم جديد، مسار يبين حدود التحرر الجنسي المزعوم وينتهي بعودة رومنسية إلى قيم القلب والروح.
