لقد كان تأثير الحضارة الإسلامية في العالم الغربي المسيحي كبيرا (خلال العصور الوسطى) إذ انتقلت كثير من المؤلفات العلمية، في مختلف العلوم والفنون، إلى أوربا، وترجمت إلى اللغات اللاتينية مرات متعددة وكانت تدرس في المؤسسات والمعاهد والجامعات، ويعتمد عليها كمراجع أساسية، ولذلك يعترف كثير من المستشرقين بعظمة الدور الذي قات به الثقافة الإسلامية، في إثراء الفكر الأوربي، فترة طويلة من الزمن، استمرت لقرون عديدة. ومن المعروف والثابت تاريخيا، أنه في الوقت الذي كانت البلاد الإسلامية، تمثل المشعل الفكري الوضاء الذي ينشر النور فيما حوله، ويملأ الدنيا علما ومعرفة، كانت أوربا تعيش في حالة من الجهل والتخلف والضياع والتمزق، ولما أرادت أن ترفع عن كاهلها عبء ذلك الوضع المهين، التفتت إلى الحضارة الإسلامية تنهل من رحيق المعرفة والفكر، ما أمكنها ذلك، ولذلك عكف علماؤها، ورجال الدين فيها، على دراسة – الآثار العلمية التي كتبها العلماء المسلمون من أمثال : ابن سينا والرازي والبتاني وابن الهيثم والبيروني والخوارزمي والكندي والفارابي وغيرهم، فكانت هذه المؤلفات، تمثل المنهل العذب، الذي كان طلاب المعرفة ينهلون منه.
