يعد هذا الكتاب واحدا من الكتب التي أرخت لربابنة الملاحة البحرية العربية في جنوب اليمن؛ أولئك الأبطال الذين خاضوا غمار معارك بحرية. سواء أكانت معارك الطبيعة أم معارك الحرب. ولم يلتفت أحد لآثارهم وبطولاتهم التي يجب أن يكون لها مكان في المكاتب العربية، فهؤلاء الملاحون الأبطال الذين بلغوا درجة في الملاحة البحرية لم يبلغها غيرهم في جنوب اليمن أخضعوا البحار لأساطيلهم. وساحوا بأنفسهم في المحيط الهندي والبحر الأحمر والبحر العربي؛ إذ إنهم كانوا يملكون أسطولا من السفن الشراعية، وقد امتد عهدهم إلى النصف الأخير من القرن الرابع عشر الهجري، حيث بدأ يتناقص عددهم يوما بعد يوم. ينتمي هؤلاء الربابنة إلى قرية الحامي. إحدى قرى حضرموت التي يطلق عليها أهالي الحامي الآن اسم (البلاد الفوقية). تلك القرية العريقة ذات التاريخ البحري الغني بالخبرة الملاحية، التي وقفت وحدها شاهدا على ما لأهلها من باع طويل في معرفة خصائص السفن الشراعية وطرائق تسييرها من الناحيتين الإدارية والفنية. فأهالي الحامي رجال بحر موهوبون. وخبراء بالنجوم وبمسالك الملاحة الساحلية. فقد عانوا كل صنوف المغامرات والأخطار، وبذلوا الأرواح في سبيل المعرفة والجهاد من أجل العيش الكريم والحفاظ على وطنهم وحمايته من القراصنة البرتغاليين المستعمرين في سبيل أن يسلم الوطن ويعلو شرفه. فمغامراتهم وبطولاتهم استطاعت أن تهز مشاعرنا.
