إن مفهوم التناقض الثنوي الأخلاقي بين الروحين: روح الخر، وروح الشر والعلاقة بينهما، ومدى علاقتهما بالإله الخالق اهورامزدا، شغلت حيزا مهما في الدراسات التي اهتمت بهذه الديانة، وان أي محاولة لإعادة تفسير هذه المسألة تعد عقيمة، في ظل الشروح الكثيرة التي تقدم بها عدد كبير من العلماء. إلا أن مسائل أخرى ما زالت غامضة، ومحيرة للمؤرخ منها: ما هي طبيعة العبادة لدى الزرادشتيين؟ ما هي الكائنات المقدسة التي قدسها الزرادشتيون فضلا عن الالهة، هل يمكن التوغل في أعماق هذه الديانة ومحاولة الكشف عن طبيعة المقدس من خلالها؟ أسئلة يجب على المؤرخ أن يحاول الإجابة عنها، وإن كانت تلك الأجوبة التي قد يسعى أن يجيب عنها تبقى افتراضية إلى حد كبير، وغير قطعية، ويبدو أن ذلك يعود بشكل رئيس إلى الطبيعة الصعبة للنص الافستي الذي يظهر عدم تماسكه، وتفككه، وغموضه، إلى حد يصعب على المؤرخ أن يحدد بالضبط خياراته في محاولة وضع افتراضات مناسبة تحاول أن تشرح طبيعة هذا النص أو ذاك.
