يصدر هذا الكتاب في فترة عصيبة من تاريخ أمتنا الإسلامية والعربية، ويعالج قضية جوهرية شغلت حيزا كبيرا من جدليات نظمها وفكرها وثقافتها، وأدبيات ثورتها وصراعاتها الداخلية والخارجية. ولم يأخذ الفكر الليبرالي حظه من الدراسات التحليلية والنقدية في حقول الدراسات الإسلامية خلال عقود طويلة مضت، كما حدث مع أفكار وتيارات أخرى، وربما يعود ذلك إلى أن الليبرالية كثيرا ما تسترت وراء ستار الديمقراطية، وتنكرت أحيانا أخرى بأقنعة: الحرية الفكرية والسلوكية، والسعادة الفردية، وقيم التحضر والتمدين والتحديث؛ في أوقات كانت معظم الشعوب العربية والإسلامية تئن تحت وطأة نظم شمولية قمعية، تاقت معها القلوب والشعوب إلى كل معاني الحرية. وكان من المجالات الخطرة التي اندفع إليها بعض أرباب الخطاب الليبرالي العربي ميادين الأحكام الشرعية والأديان السماوية، خصوصا دين الإسلام الخاتم، فخاضوا فيه بغير علم، وانتهكوا حرمته بغير دليل، وظهر منهم نقد حاد لما يعرفه المسلمون من دينهم، وتشكيك تتابعي شامل وصل إلى مسلمات الدين وقطعيات الشريعة. ويتم ذلك كله تحت ذريعة حرية الرأي والتفكير، ونسبية لحق والحقيقة، وتاريخية المعنى والتشريع، والعقلانية ونبذ التقليد، وإعمال المصالح والمقاصد، وبأن خلافهم مع الإسلاميين إنما هو في فهم النص لا في ذاته، وفي الفهم المتطرف للدين لا في حقيقته وجوهره. فأوجدوا من الإسلام نسخة مشوهة، لا تربطها بأصل الدين صلة، بل هو في حقيقته انسلاخ تام من الدين الذي جاء به محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم والشريعة التي تضمنتها نصوص الكتاب والسنة. واجتهاد من غير أهله فيما لا يسوغ فيه الاجتهاد أصلا. ويأتي هذا الكتاب ليكشف حقيقة هذه الدعوى، هادفا تتبع النتاج الفكري لأرباب التيار الليبرالي العربي، فيما يتعلق بموقفهم من الدين الإسلامي، وكشف الخيط الناظم لهذا الموقف من محكمات الدين ومسلماته، والنتائج الحتمية التي تدفع إليها المنهجية الليبرالية فيما يتصل بمصادر التلقي ومناهج الاستدلال، والموقف من العقل، ونظرية المصالح والمقاصد، وأثر ذلك على العقيدة والإيمان، وثمراته فيما يتعلق بأصول الفرائض، والمحرمات، والأخلاق، والحدود الشرعية، وقضايا المرأة، إضافة إلى ثبات الشريعة وشمولها وتحكيمها. بيانا للحق ونصيحة للخلق.
