ليس سرا أن التاريخ الموريتاني (وتاريخ الصحراء الكبرى عموما) لم يكتب حتى الساعة، ويعود ذلك إلى أسباب عديدة، منها ما هو متصل بوضعية تطور المعارف الإنسانية في بلداننا النامية، ومنها ما يرجع لتكوين الوعي التاريخي لسكان هذه البلاد. اهتم سكان المدن، ولاسيما في الشرق الموريتاني، وهم أكثر وعيا بالتاريخ من غيرهم، بتسجيل الحوادث المهمة في دفاتر خصصوها لهذا الغرض وهي ما يعرف بـ ''الحوليات'' التي دونوا فيها تواريخ الحروب، والممالك، والقبائل، ووفيات الأعيان والقادة وسني العوز والرخاء. وترك لنا علماء البلاد قديما كتبا مستقلة في التاريخ من أهمها: ''فاتحو إفريقيا وملوكها وقبائلها"، "لب الألباب في حقائق الأنساب'' من تأليف الشيخ سيدي المختار الكنتي ت 1226 هـ، ''الحسوة البيسانية في علم الأنساب الحسانية'' و''أنساب صنهاجة'' وهما مصنفان للمؤرخ محمد صالح عبد الوهاب الناصري الولاتي الحوضي ت 1271 هـ، وحديثا، عدة أعمال ذات طابع موسوعي إخباري أنجزها رجال انتقلوا إلى رحمة الله. وأنجز جيل من المؤرخين الجامعيين أطروحات قيمة في تاريخ البلاد، ولا شك أن النقص بقي حاصلا، لأن تاريخ البلاد لم يكتب حتى الساعة بطريقة ''وقائعية وبنيوية'' سهلة ودقيقة دون تحليل أو نقاش معقد أو حتى تردد أو تعليق. هذه دراسة مجملة، تتناول الملامح الأساسية من تاريخ موريتانيا في تسميتها القديمة ''بلاد شنكيطي'' منذ العصر القديم إلى نهاية أهم حدث في تاريخ الصحراء، وهو حرب صنهاجة بقيادة ((إبدوكل) ضد قبائل بني حسان العربية بقيادة أولاد الناصر. وسيلاحظ القارئ حديثنا عن بنيات ومظاهر بشرية بعد ذلك لكن بإشارات خاطفة لأن كل ما جرى من تحولات إنما نتج عن تلك الحرب أو بالعلاقة مع ما اتصل بها.
