أسهمت الأوقاف بدور كبير في المجتمعات الإسلامية: سواء في الجوانب الاقتصادية أو الاجتماعية، ولعبت دورا هاما في خدمة الثقافة الإسلامية وتطويرها وانتشارها واستمرارها. وقد اتسعت الأوقاف في الدولة العثمانية باتساع رقعتها. وكانت الأوقاف شاهدا على الحضارة العثمانية. فمن الأوقاف شيدت الجوامع، والمدارس، والمستشفيات، والمساجد، ودور الكتب. وأقيمت الكباري، والجسور والقلاع. وبيوت الأرامل والأيتام، وغيرها من المؤسسات ذات الخدمات الثقافية والاجتماعية والحضارية. وقد أسهمت نساء الحريم السلطاني وجواريه في هذه الأوقاف، فأنشأن كثيرا من المؤسسات التي أوقفت لأعمال الخير، ونذكر منهن السيدة ((خرم سلطان)) زوجة السلطان العثماني سليمان القانوني 1568 – 1520 م / 975-926 هـ ) صاحبة هذه الوقفية. والوقفية تخص المؤسستين الخيريتين اللتين أنشأتهما السيدة زوجة السلطان سليمان القانوني في مكة المكرمة والمدينة المنورة لخدمة فقراء المسلمين وطلاب العلم في المدينتين المقدستين. ويمكن من خلال هذه الوقفية فهم ملامح الحياة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية لحريم القصر العثماني ومدى إسهامهن في خدمة أهالي الحرمين الشريفين.
