تهدف هذه الترجمة لفت الانتباه إلى مصدر آخر من مصادر الكتابة التاريخية الواصفة لأحداث المغرب خلال النصف الأخير من القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين. غنها الرواية الشفوية التي يمكن اعتمادها أو الاستئناس بها لفهم بعض ما حدث خلال هذه الفترة. ولا يمكننا الادعاء ان ما جاء في هذا في هذا الكتاب كله صائب في بابه. لاعتبارات كثيرة أهمها كون لويس أرنو قد تغيب عنه أشياء، أو يزيد أخرى حين سماعه رواية الحاج سالم العبدي البخاري، فضلا عما يمكن أن يصيب ذاكرة الراوي من سهو أو نسيان أو... ومع هذا كله يبقى كتاب ''زمن المحلات'' مهما جدا للقارئ لتفرده بآراء وتتبعه لدقائق قد لا توجد في مصادر تاريخ هذه الفترة بحكم ملازمته أهم التحركات المخزنية / السلطانية منذ عهد مولاي الحسن الأول إلى بداية عهد الحماية. ونحن إن نترجم هذا الكتاب نبغي تمكين الباحثين في هذه المرحلة من اخذ فكرة نوعية عن الرواية الشفوية التي قد تساعد في تدقيق كل جديد ومميز، كما يمكنها الإفادة في الفهم والتفسير والتحليل والمقارنة والاقناع".
