يؤرخ هذا الكتاب لطائفة العكاكزة أشهر الطوائف البدعية بالمغرب خلال العصر الحديث، ويبدد الغموض الذي ظل يكتنف أخبارها في المصادر المغربية والأجنبية التي توهمت تعددها إلى فرق مختلفة، وتضاربت في تحديد منطلقها ومصدرها، وقدرت عمرها بنحو ثلاثين قرنا، وأوصلت حيلها بنحل شتى ممتدة من الوثنية المتوسطية القديمة إلى الماسونية الحديثة. والواقع أنها طائفة صوفية شاذلية زروقية راشدية، نشأت بالمغرب خلال الربع الأول من القرن 10 هـ / 16 م، ووافقت في نظرتها إلى الله والوجود والإنسان رؤية طيفورية بسطامية، وقصدت إلى علاج أدواء الألفية العصبية. ولم تفلح في حسم مادتها لا الدولة الوطاسية ولا الدولة السعدية، ولم تجد محاكمتها خلافة السلطان المولى الرشيد، ولم تستأصل شأفتها النكبة التي حلت بها على يد المولى إسماعيل عام 1102 هـ / 1691 م كما هو متواتر. ولبثت بعدها مرهقة في ذلة وخمول طوال القرنين 12 و 13 هـ / 18 و 19 م، إلى أن نفض الغبار عن رسمها الماحل نبش الفرنسيين في مطلع القرن 14 هـ / 20 م.
