في هذا الكتاب يقدم فرانسوا راستيي قراءة حديثة للإرث الثقافي الغربي حول النص، إذ يعمد إلى عرض منهجي للحقول المعرفية المتصلة بالنص، وهي نوعان: الحقول المعرفية القديمة ومنها البلاغة والفيلولوجيا والهيرومينوطيقا، والحقول الحديثة النشأة كاللسانيات والأسلوبية والشعرية والموضوعاتية. وقام الكاتب في جل فصول الكتاب بحفر إبيستيمولوجي للكشف عن الخلفيات الفلسفية والدينية والإيديولوجية التي تتحكم في المفاهيم والمناهج وآليات تحليل النصوص وتصنيفها، وهكذا يتجاوز الكاتب العرض والتوليف ليطرح تصوره الخاص. وتتمثل أطروحته في توحيد علوم النص على أساس المبحث الجامع و الموحد الذي يمكن نعته بـ ((دلالة النصوص)).
