في هذا العمل خلاصة نظرية جديدة عن العلاقة بين الإنسان واللغة عبر تنوع اللغات البشرية. يعرض القسم الأول منه الوضع الحالي لبعض الأبحاث الأساسية حول اللغة: وحدة ملكة الكلام، رغم التنوع الأصلي للغات، وظروف ولادة لسان ما، والعلاقة بين الكتابة والشفاهة في التاريخ، على سبيل المثال... يقترح القسم الثاني نظرة انتروبولوجية تتناول العلاقة اللسانية، بما فيها من تعبيري واعتباطي، كما تتناول العلاقة بين اللسان وبين الواقع والمنطق، إضافة إلى استعمال الكلام لغايات السيطرة. أما القسم الثالث فيقترح نظرية وصفية للألسنة تتسع، في الوقت نفسه، للعلاقة بين المشاركين في الحوار ولإنتاج المعنى. وأما الختام فنشيد للألسنة: ألسنة تبقى موضوع شغف لا ينتهي.
