جعل راندال نقطة البدء في بحثه عن تكوين العقل الحديث ما وقع في القرن الثاني عشر المسيحي في أوروبا، وما كان للكنيسة الكاثوليكية يومئذ من سلطان، وكيف أدت نظم الإقطاع في القرون الوسطى إلى نضال بين الكنيسة والإقطاع يشبه النضال بين الكنيسة والدولة في العصر الحديث، وكيف تمخضت أحداث ذلك العهد عن حركة الإصلاح البرونستنتية التي قام بها لوثر وكلفن وكوسوث، ثم كيف تطور التفكير الأوروبي، أو التفكير الغربي إن شئت، فيما تلا ذلك من القرون فكان لتطوره أثره في السياسة، وفي الإجتماع، وفي البحث العلمي المستقل عن الدين، مما انتهى إلى التفكير الغربي الحديث المتأثر بالإتجاه العلمي، وما نشأ عن هذا التفكير من بعث في الحياة الإقتصادية ومن تغلب الغرب على أقطار الأرض المختلفة ونشره الأفكار التي ابتكرها العلم الحديث في هذه الأقطار.
