تبدو لفظة الولاء من الألفاظ المثيرة للجدل، والتي دائماً ما يتطور معناها، فارتبطت قديماً بالسلطة والحرب، وحديثاً بالمجتمع والبيئة والقيم الاخلاقية، وعلى الرغم من أن الولاء قد بات قيمة من القيم التي يطالب الفرد بالتمسك بها فإنها ترتبط بمشكلات كثيرة، منها ما يتعلق بطبيعة الولاء ومدى الحاجة إليه، وما إذا كان فطرياً أو مكتسباً، ومنها ما يختص بأنواع الولاء وصفات القضايا التي يتجه إليها ، وأخيراً منها ما ينشأ بسبب صراع الولاءات وتعارضها، ومع تطور المجتمعات وتشعب العلاقات، اكتسب مفهوم الولاء أهمية كبرى لعلاقته بتطور المجتمع وتماسكه، وبدأ الاتجاه لدراسة أسس الحياة الخلقية، وطبيعة القانون الأخلاقي، فإنسان العصر يعاني من الحيرة تجاه المثل العليا وواجباته الأخلاقية.
ولما كانت الفلسفة تدرس المبادئ والأسس ومهمتها نقد الحياة، جاءت فلسفة الولاء تنظر للولاء بوصفه مبدأ أخلاقياً، وتدرس المشكلات المرتبطة به دراسة نقدية؛ فتحدد معنى الولاء وطبيعته، وأنواع القضايا الجديرة بالولاء، فأمكن تأسيس العالم الأخلاقي على مفهوم عقلي للولاء، وتم تركيز الفضائل والواجبات الرئيسية حول مبدأ واحد، يسهم في توضيح مشكلات العصر الأخلاقية، وينهي الصراع بين الولاءات، ويربط مفهوم الولاء بالدين والحقيقة والواقع.
