عمل مترجماً في الهيئة العامة للاستعلامات بين عامي 1956 و1957، وعمل مخرجاً للدراما، ومذيعاً في البرنامج الثاني (الثقافي) الذي كان من مؤسسيه حتى عام 1975 حيث منع من الكتابة. بعد منعه من الكتابة ترك مصر وسافر كثيراً في افريقيا و آسيا بحثاً عن العمل كمترجم. منذ عام 1981 وحتى 1995 عاش في جنيف حيث عمل هناك كمترجم للأمم المتحدة. بعدها رجع إلى مصر ولا يزال هناك.
حاز على جائزة الدولة التقديرية فى الآداب سنة 1998
حصل على جائزة جوزيبي اكيربي الإيطالية سنة 2000 عن خالتي صفية والدير حصل على الجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية عن روايته واحة الغروب.

Book Description
أذهب إلى العمل في الصباح، وأعود في المساء للبيت.
يحدث هذا خمسة أيام في الأسبوع، يحدث هذا في مدينة أجنبيه في الشمال. حين أنزل في الصباح كثيرا ما أجد على محطة الأتوبيس فتاة شقراء في خدها طابع الحسن، بمجرد ان تراني قادما من بيعد تحول وجهها للناحية الأخرى. ولا تنظر في وجهي أبدا مهما طال وقوفنا.
وعندما أعود إلى البيت في المساء أفتح التليفزيون وأغلقه وأفتح الراديو وأغلقه وأتجول قليلا في الشقة الخالية. أعدل أوضاع الصور على الحائط والكتب في الأرفف، وأغسل صحونا، وأكلم نفسى في المرآة قليلا. يتقدم الليل.
وفي معظم الليالي يكلمني في التليفون صديقي كمال الذي يسكن في مدينة اخرى. يسألني هل هناك أخبار؟ أقول ليست هناك أخبار، فيشكو أحواله قليلا وأشكو أحوالي قليلا ، واخيرا يتنهد ويقول ربما أطلبك غدا.
بعد فترة أنام. غالبا ما يحدث هذا وانا أقرأ.
