التحقت بالعمل في عدد من دور النشر، بدءًا من «دار الفاروق للاستثمارات الثقافية»، ثم «دار نهضة مصر للطباعة والنشر والتوزيع»، وأخيرًا شغلت منصب مترجم أول في «مؤسسة هنداوي للتعليم والثقافة» — «كلمات عربية» وقتذاك — لمدة عام ونصف تقريبًا قبل أن تنتقل للعمل مع المؤسسة كمترجمة حرة.

ترفض ميلر طرقَ تعليم القراءة التقليدية، وتتبنَّى بدلًا من ذلك إعطاءَ الطلاب حريةَ اختيار ما يقرءونه، علاوةً على تركيزها على تأسيس مكتبةٍ في كل فصل تضمُّ أكثرَ الكتب إثارةً لاهتمام التلاميذ. والأهم أنها تركز على أن تقدِّم مثالًا يُحتَذَى به في سلوكيات القراءة الملائمة والموثوق بها. إن حماسها للقراءة مُعْدٍ ومُلْهِمٌ، والنتائج التي تحقِّقها تتحدَّث عن نفسها. مهما يبلغ تأخُّرُ طلاب ميلر عند التحاقهم بفصولها، فإنهم في نهاية المطاف يصلون إلى قراءة ما يقرب من ٤٠ كتابًا في العام الواحد، ويحصلون على درجات مرتفعة في الاختبارات القياسية، ويتولَّد بداخلهم حبٌّ للقراءة يدوم معهم لوقت طويل بعد ذلك.
سوف ترى في هذا الكتاب كيف تقود ميلر طلابَها لاكتشاف ثمار القراءة الوافرة، وكيف تساعدهم على الإبحار في عالم الأدب. إن هذا الكتاب سيساعد المعلمين والإداريين والآباء على إدراك كيفية التغلُّب على الحالة الراهنة في الفصول المدرسية؛ حيث يتعلَّم بعضُ الأطفال القراءةَ، بينما يتعلَّم الكثير منهم كُرْهَها.
