إذا كانت الحركات الإسلامية عموماً تمثل عالماً غامضاً بالنسبة إلى الغرب، فإن الحركات الإسلامية في السعودية تحديداً كانت ولا تزال تمثل وسطاً شديد الغموض، ليس فقط بالنسبة إلى الغرب أو العالم العربي، بل حتى للمثقفين والمتابعين في داخل السعودية.
اليوم، ومن خلال كتاب "زمن الصحوة"، يقدم الباحث الفرنسي د.ستيفان لاكروا أطروحته للدكتوراه التي تتناول توثيقاً وتحليلاً لتاريخ وسوسيولوجيا تشكّل الحركات الإسلامية في السعودية منذ منتصف القرن العشرين وحتى أواخر العقد الأول من القرن الواحد والعشرين، أي المرحلة التي لا تزال بقعة مُعتمة في الوسط البحثي.
يبدأ لاكروا كتابه بلمحة تاريخية عن ولادة المملكة العربية السعودية وتطورها، وينتقل بعدها إلى تحليل كيف انتقل الناشطون الإٍسلاميون من البلدان العربية ليستقروا في السعودية ولينخرطوا في حركة جمعت بين السياسة من جهة والدين من جهة أخرى، وأطلقت على نفسها اسم "الصحوة".
ويتابع مراحل تشكل الصحوة وروافدها الفكرية والسياسية، وأبرز محطاتها وحركاتها ورموزها وإنقساماتها وعلاقتها المتفاوتة بالسلطة السياسيّة.
هذا الكتاب يُعد أول بحثٍ أكاديمي موسّع يدرس تاريخ وبنية الحركات الإسلامية في السعودية... وقد قضى الباحث في سبيل إتمام هذه الدراسة ستة أعوام معظمها في السعوديّة، تتبّع خلالها عشرات المصادر والوثائق، وأجرى عشرات الحوارات مع اهم الشخصيات الفاعلة في وسط الصحوة.
