لقد رفض الفكر الغربي منذ بداية العصر الحديث كل منهج قبلي وكل معطى سابق، واكتشف زيف كثير من المسلمات السابقة، وبذلك جعل طريق معرفته الوحيد مبنياً على التجربة، مستبعداً كل معرفة ما ورائية ومؤمناً بالمعرفة الإنسانية وحدها، ولم يثن هذا الفكر عن مسيرته محاولات الكثيرين للدفاع عن المعرفة الإلهية عن طريق الحدس أو العقل البديهي. وبذلك جعل الطبيعة مصدر معرفته والميدان الخصب لتقرير ما يعتبره الحقيقة وبهذا كشف سطحية وزيف الكثير من المعطيات التي كانت تعتبر مقدسة في حياة الشعوب، وكل ذلك ضمن مناهج علمية تستهدي بالحقيقة وحدها دون تهيب أو خوف من آراء وتيارات تستسلم بِدَعة إلى خرافات وأساطير وقيم قديمة عفى عليها الزمن، وبدون أن تترك ميداناً من ميادين المعرفة الإنسانية المترابطة بمعزل عن البحث والاستقصاء.
من هنا تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب الذي يتناول المؤلف من خلاله تاريخ المعتقدات والأفكار الدينية، مناقشاً جدلية المقدس وذلك عبر تحليل مظاهر المقدس في نظام تسلسل تاريخي دون خلطه بين "عصر" المفهوم الديني مع أول وثيقة تثبته. ومن جهة أخرى، وفي المعيار الذي يسمح به التوثيق، أكد المؤلف وبإصرار على الأزمات في عمقها، وبخاصة على الفترات الخلاقة لمختلف التقاليد، وباختصار، لقد حاول المؤلف في كتابه هذا توضيح الإسهامات الرئيسية في تاريخ الأفكار والمعتقدات الدينية.
