يدور هذا الكتاب حول موضوع ذي طابع إشكالي، وهو كيفية التعامل مع واقع التنوع الثقافي واللغوي والديني، والتعدد العِرْقي والقومي، في مجتمعات العالم المعاصر؟...
نشأت حول هذا الموضوع إجتهادات نظرية وعملية عديدة، وخاصة في مرحلة "ما بعد الحداثة" في الغرب، وتدور هذه الإجتهادات إجمالاً حول قضية يدعوها مؤلف هذا الكتاب "إشكالية التعددية الثقافية"، مع التركيز بصفة خاصة على المحاولة الكبرى التي قدمها أحد أكبر منظّري "التعددية الثقافية"، وهو المفكر السياسي "كيملكا".
ينتهي المؤلف إلى التفرقة بين نوعين من سبل معالجة الإشكالية المذكورة:
أ-سبل المعالجة في المجتمعات الغنية، والغربية منها بصفة خاصة، والمزدحمة بمشكلات ناجمة عن الهجرة الدولية الموسعة من أوروبا إلى الأمريكيتين في العصر الحديث، وتهميش "السكان الأصليين"، وإزدواجية الأغلبية والأقليات القومية، مما يطرح حلولاً قائمة على نوع من التفكيك الداخلي لبنية "الدولة - الأمة".
ب-سبل المعالجة في دول العالم الثالث، حيث التنوع الثقافي أصيل تاريخياً ومتجذر، مجتمعياً وجغرافياً، مما جعل الجماعات الثقافية ذات موروث تاريخي وثقافي مشترك، بالرغم من تسّيس هذه الجماعات وتنافسها - وتبعاً لذلك فإن أصالة وجودها التاريخي والثقافي، تؤدي إلى تركيز مطالبها الذاتية على المشاركة في السلطة والتعبير عن ذاتها الثقافية.
