رواية محكمة، تتتبع المصائر المتشابكة لأفراد عائلة «ريتشاردسون» المثالية، والأم والابنة الغامضتين اللتين قلبتا حياتهم رأسًا على عقب.
تأتي «مِيا وارِن» مع ابنتها المراهقة «بيرل» إلى شايكِر هايتس، الضاحية الهادئة في كليفلاند، وتؤجر منزلًا من عائلة «ريتشاردسون»، ثم تبدأ «مِيا» العمل في منزل عائلة «ريتشاردسون» لتساعد الأم «إيلينا»، فينجذب أطفال عائلة «ريتشاردسون» الأربعة إلى «مِيا» وابنتها. لكن «مِيا» تحمل معها ماضيًا غامضًا، وتجاهلًا للقواعد، مما يُهدِّد بقلب حياة هذا المجتمع السكاني المخطط بعناية.
يحاول زوجان من أصدقاء عائلة «ريتشاردسون» القدامى تبني طفلة صينية-أمريكية، فتندلع معركة للحصول على حق الحضانة، مما يقسِّم البلدة بشكل درامي، ويضع «مِيا» و«إيلينا» وجهًا لوجه. وتصر «إيلينا» على البحث في ماضي «مِيا» لشكها فيها وفي دوافعها، لكن هوسها يؤدي إلى خسائر مدمِّرة وغير متوقعة.
تكشف «حرائق صغيرة في كل مكان» وطأة الأسرار، وطبيعة الفن والهوية، والجاذبية العاتية للأمومة، وخطورة الاعتقاد بأن اتباع القواعد يمكن أن يجنبنا الكوارث.
ترجمت سها السباعي هذه الرواية ترجمة أمينة وبارعة، ونقلت روح وثقافة النص الأمريكي بدقة إلى اللغة العربية.
