حظي موضوع التصوف بمكانة هامة في تاريخ الفكر الإسلامي، والتصوف الحق يستمد أصوله وتعاليمه وتوجيهاته من الشرع وقد كان ظهور التصوف في القرن الثاني الهجري بمثابة عملية تصحيح تهدف إلى العودة بالمجتمع الإسلامي إلى سالف عهده ووضعه على الخط الصحيح الذي تركه لهم الرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام. كما أن التصوف والجهاد صفوان متلازمان لا يكادان يفترقان، لذا فإن الغرب الاستعمارى عندما وجه نظره نحو البلاد الإسلامية وجد في شيوخ الطرق الصوفية خصوماً أشداء أعلنوا الجهاد ودعوا المسلمين للدفاع عن حمى الإسلام.
ففي الجزائر قام شيوخ الطرق الصوفية ورجال الزوايا بالتصدي للاستعمار ومقاومة حملات الغزو، وقاد شيوخ ومقدموا الطرق الصوفية ورجال الزوايا بالتصدي للاستعمار ومقاومى حملات الغزو، وقاد شيوخ ومقدموا الطرق القادرية والرحمانية والسنوسية والدرقاوية كل الثورات التي نشبت صد الاحتلال الفرنسي في الجزائر. ومن قبل ذلك ضد الإسبان والبرتغال والعثمانيين كما كان للطرق الصوفية دور كبير في خدمة الإسلام والدعوة إليه في مختلف جهات العالم.
وقد خص المؤلف الطرق الصوفية والزوايا بالدرس والبحث الدقيق متحرراً من كل ميل أو هوى، رغبة منه في إظهار الصورة الحقيقية المشرقة لهذه الطرق، ودورها في الميدان الجهادي وما قامت به في المقاومة الوطنية، والكتاب يقع في ثلاثة أجزاء، عرض الجزء الأول لظهور التصوف وأسبابه وحقيقته، كما عرض لأهم الطرق بالقطر الجزائري ودور كل منها.
أما الجزء الثاني فيعرض للزوايا وتاريخ ظهورها وأشهر الزوايا في الرباط وغيرها من المدن والقصبات الجزائرية، كما يقدم عرضاً مفصلاً للبرامج لتعليمية في كل زاوية. أما الجزء الثالث فيعرض للقانون الأساسي لجامعة الزوايا لشمال أفريقيا كما يقدم ترجمة لكبار رجال التصوف في الجزائر ومشاهيرهم.
