في إطار علم اجتماع غير إيديولوجي سعى يوسف شلحت إلى تبيان الموقع الاجتماعي للأديان، من دون أن يدّعي توظيفاً آخر لهذا الدرس سوى التوظيف العلمي، فالدين ظاهرة سوسيولوجية ذات توظيفات شتّى على أصعدة الإيديولوجيات السياسية والاقتصادية، وعلى العالم أن يدرس هذه التوظيفات بذاتها، لا أن يضع الدين كإيديولوجيا في مواجهة إيديولوجيات أخرى. فالمطلوب علمياً هو درس ما يحدث في المجتمع، وتحديد نسبة الحدث الديني وقوته، وتبيان أثره وتأثيره، وخصوصاً تأثره بالمجتمع الذي يعتنقه.
وبتعبير رمزي نقول: إن الدكتور شلحت أراد أن ينقل الظاهرة الدينية من حيّز الظل أي الظلمة، إلى حيّز النور أي التسمية؟ وإنه لم يدرس الدين الاجتماعي وفي نظام المجتمع وحتى في سياسته وأدائه الاقتصادي وهويته الثقافية. وهذا ويذهب الدكتور يوسف شلحت غلى نقض الفرضية والنظرية التي قامت على اعتبار (الديانات عبادة أموات)، ويكتشف سوسيولوجياً وإثنولوجيا، أن الديانات اقدم من عبادات الأموات، بدعوى أنّ دفن الميت لم يحدث تاريخياًُ إلا في مجتمعات تعتقد بوجود عالم آخر، وباستمرار الحياة هنا وهناك، على إيقاعات مختلفة. وعليه، فإن الديانات هي التي أسست في الجماعات عقيدة دفن الأموات، وجعل عالم الأموات (الأضرحة والمقابر) متواصلاً مع عالم الأحياء، خصوصاً في القبائل المستقرة، وفي المدن.
أما عبادة الأموات كظاهرة اجتماعية فتندرج في سياق المجتمع المتطور الذي يواصل تكريم رجالاته في حياتهم ثم في مماتهم. وفي موقع آخر من الكتاب يتساءل سلحت: ما هو مستقبل الديانات؟ نافياً ما ذهب إليه مفكرون، من القرن التاسع عشر إلى منتصف القرن العشرين، أن ينتهي الدين كعقيدة، وتالياً ينفي أن يكون الإلحاد أو التلحيد بديلاً من التوحيد أو التدين. وعنده أننا أمام ظواهر متداخلة، متعايشة متصارعة.
وأن علم الاجتماع يدرس ما يحدث، وقد يتوقع بمنطق السببية الاجتماعية، وما هو ممكن الحدوث، لكنّه لا يدّعي التنبؤ الذي يدخل في باب الإيديولوجيات الطوباوية، ولا يعني العلماء العلميين/العلميّين إلاّ بوصفه ظاهرة أخرى من ظواهر الخيال الاجتماعي، بتوظيفه الديني أو السياسي. وبعده يقدم لنا كتب شلحت نظرية جديدة في منهج البحث السوسيولوجي لدرس المقدس الديني، ويفتح فضاء الحواء حول ظاهرة ملتبسة، مسكوت عنها، بلا معنى. هنا يقدم الكاتب معنى آخر للنظام الاجتماعي الديني، مبرزاً إمكان المعرفة العلمية لظاهرة، ينفي عنها مشيّعوها، إمكان درسها.
