ليس جون ديوي مربياً أو أستاذاً في التربية فحسب بل هو فيلسوف المربين وشيخ فلاسفة التربية الحديثة. وما كتابه "المدرسة والمجتمع" الذي ترجم إلى أمهات لغات العالم إلا جانب من جوانب إنتاجه الضخم الذي قدمه إلى عالم التربية والفلسفة في العصر الحديث. فقد استطاع الأستاذ ديوي أن يظهر إفلاس التربية القديمة ويبرهن على عدم صلاحها للجيل الحاضر المتميز بمشاكل جديدة لم يصادفها آباؤنا ولا أجدادنا، فهي تربية كان قوامها حشو الذهن بطائفة من المعلومات المدونة في الكتب والأسفار وتلقين الطالب حلول المسائل بغية النجاح في الامتحان.
وقد كانت وجهة النظر هذه تمثل الرأي السائد "إن الطفل وجد للمدرسة" ذلك الرأي ثبتت خرافته فاستحال إلى "أن المدرسة وجدت للطفل" وإضافة إلى ما تقدم فإن أهم الأغراض التي دفعت بالأستاذ ديوي إلى وضع مؤلف "المدرسة والمجتمع" بين يدي مربي الجيل ومثقفي النشء هي حملهم على ربط المدرسة بالحياة وجعلها على أتم اتصال بها، إذ إن النظرة الحديثة إلى التربية هي أنها لا تتم في المدرسة وحدها بل في المنزل والملعب والسينما وفي ميدان العمل.
وهي تبتدئ قبل الولادة وتستمر إلى الشيخوخة، أي أنها تشمل الحياة في جميع أدوارها ومختلف أعمالها، ومن واجب المدرسة أن تتدبر هذه الحقائق وتوفق نفسها للقيام بهذه المهمة الشاملة. وعليها أن تقوم بوظيفة الإرشاد للطفل في جميع سني الدراسة وتساعده على فهم القوى المعقدة التي تعمل في بيئته. فليست المدرسة الحديثة تحصر نفسها بين جدرانها الأربعة تجعل همها كما أشرنا إليه دراسة الكتب متجاهلة الحياة حولها، بل المدرسة الحديثة مجتمع مصغر منزه من الشوائب والأدران التي قد تعلق بالمجتمع الأكبر ليعتاد الطفل فيها الحياة الفضلى ويتمرن على التعاون الاجتماعي والإخلاص للجماعة والوطن، وهذا ما حدا بالمربي الكبير ديوي أن يعرف التربية بأنها "الحياة" أو أنها "النمو" أو أنها "التوجيه الاجتماعي".
